An unexpected discovery in a simple sausage
Sometimes, strange things happen in the most ordinary situations. Yesterday, after work, I went into the supermarket—tired, hungry, and not in the mood to cook. I grabbed a package of my usual sausages, the ones I buy when I want something quick to eat. The price was normal, the package was sealed, everything seemed fine.
At home, I cut some slices, made myself a sandwich, and ate it without thinking. I put the rest in the fridge for breakfast. Nothing suspicious, just ordinary.
The next morning I took out the package, put water on to boil, and started cutting the sausages for an omelet. Suddenly, the knife hit something hard. I thought maybe they were frozen. I tried again—same thing. The knife stopped as if there was something metallic inside.
I carefully cut open the sausage and saw a silvery glint. I thought it was a piece of aluminum foil. But when I pulled the object out, a chill ran down my spine. In my hand was… a USB drive covered in bits of meat and grease.
I didn’t know whether to feel disgust, fear, or disbelief. We trusted that the food was safe. And I had already eaten several slices! Just thinking about it made my stomach churn.
However, curiosity got the better of me. I cleaned the USB drive, dried it, and after a moment’s hesitation, plugged it into my laptop. The computer recognized it immediately. Inside, there was only one folder: “OPEN ME”.
My heart was pounding. I opened it: there was only a photo of a man sitting at a table, looking at the camera with a faint smile. No name, no date, no context. Just a face, mysteriously hidden inside a food item.
I stared at the screen for a long time, trying to understand. Maybe it was an accident on the production line. Maybe someone dropped it by mistake. Or maybe it was some kind of weird joke.
I decided to stay calm. I called the supermarket and explained the situation. The cashier, surprised, apologized and asked me to bring the package in. She promised to inform the supplier.
Feeling a little calmer, I took the memory card and the delivery was registered. They said they would contact me.
That night, over a cup of tea, I reflected on how life sometimes stops us to remind us to pay attention. A single moment can shatter our everyday sense of security. Since then, I read labels carefully, check dates, and listen to my intuition.
Now, every time I walk past the sausage aisle, I smile — not out of fear, but because I know that even the simplest purchase can hide an unforgettable story.
